Hiring assessment comparison

Measure the work sample—not a theory about the person.

A conversation simulation asks whether someone can demonstrate relevant behaviors in a realistic task. It does not claim to diagnose personality, honesty, culture fit or future success.

Different questions

Personality and performance are not interchangeable.

A personality questionnaire describes responses to a standardized self-report model. An interview captures experience and communication with the hiring team. A simulation shows how the candidate handles a defined customer situation.

Each may provide different information, but TryTheRole stays within the narrower and more explainable question: what did the person demonstrate in this job-related conversation?

Interview

What can they explain?

Useful for experience, motivation, context and follow-up discussion, but vulnerable to rehearsed answers and inconsistent questions.

Personality test

How do they self-report?

May describe broad tendencies but should not be confused with direct evidence of a specific customer behavior.

Conversation simulation

What can they demonstrate?

Shows listening, discovery, accuracy, objection handling and next-step behavior in a consistent work sample.

Human review

What does the evidence mean?

Qualified reviewers combine relevant sources, consider context and remain accountable for the decision.

Better boundaries

Avoid claims the conversation cannot support.

A simulated call cannot reveal whether someone is honest, loyal, emotionally stable or a guaranteed future top performer. Pretending otherwise weakens trust and creates unnecessary risk.

A defensible approach defines genuine job requirements, observes relevant behaviors and explains how the evidence was used alongside the wider selection process.

Do measure

Whether the candidate acknowledged the concern, asked required questions and proposed an appropriate next step.

Do not infer

Hidden personality, mental state, deception, protected characteristics or motives not demonstrated by the work sample.

Do review

Scenario relevance, accessibility, consistency, evidence quality and the role of human judgment.

Frequently asked questions

Questions leaders ask before they begin.

Clear boundaries make the system easier to evaluate and safer to use.

Is a simulation a personality test?+

No. It is a role-related work sample focused on behavior demonstrated within a defined conversation.

Can a simulation predict who will be the best employee?+

It can provide relevant evidence, but no single assessment can guarantee future performance or replace a complete selection process.

Should we stop interviewing candidates?+

No. Interviews provide context and allow reciprocal discussion. Simulation adds a different form of evidence.

Can we score culture fit?+

Vague culture-fit scoring can introduce inconsistency and bias. Criteria should focus on clearly defined, job-related behaviors.
